{"id":206892,"date":"2016-06-15T15:39:54","date_gmt":"2016-06-15T15:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/episcopalchurch:8888\/lectionary\/william-wilberforce-social-reformer-1833\/"},"modified":"2021-02-01T18:19:25","modified_gmt":"2021-02-01T23:19:25","slug":"william-wilberforce","status":"publish","type":"lectionary","link":"https:\/\/www.episcopalchurch.org\/lectionary\/william-wilberforce\/","title":{"rendered":"William Wilberforce, Social Reformer, 1833"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Collect:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rite I:<\/strong><br>Let thy continual mercy, O Lord, enkindle in thy Church&nbsp;the never-failing gift of love; that, following the example&nbsp;of thy servant William Wilberforce, we may have grace to&nbsp;defend the poor, and maintain the cause of those who have&nbsp;no helper; for the sake of him who gave his life for us,&nbsp;thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth&nbsp;with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever.&nbsp;Amen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rite II:<\/strong><br>Let your continual mercy, O Lord, kindle in your Church&nbsp;the never-failing gift of love; that, following the example&nbsp;of your servant William Wilberforce, we may have grace&nbsp;to defend the poor, and maintain the cause of those who&nbsp;have no helper; for the sake of him who gave his life for&nbsp;us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns&nbsp;with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.&nbsp;Amen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Lesson:<\/strong> 2 Samuel 12:1\u201310<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>and the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, \u2018There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor.&nbsp;<sup>2<\/sup>The rich man had very many flocks and herds;&nbsp;<sup>3<\/sup>but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. He brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his meagre fare, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him.&nbsp;<sup>4<\/sup>Now there came a traveller to the rich man, and he was loath to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man\u2019s lamb, and prepared that for the guest who had come to him.\u2019&nbsp;<sup>5<\/sup>Then David\u2019s anger was greatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan, \u2018As the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;lives, the man who has done this deserves to die;&nbsp;<sup>6<\/sup>he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>7<\/sup>Nathan said to David, \u2018You are the man! Thus says the&nbsp;Lord, the God of Israel: I anointed you king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul;&nbsp;<sup>8<\/sup>I gave you your master\u2019s house, and your master\u2019s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added as much more.&nbsp;<sup>9<\/sup>Why have you despised the word of the&nbsp;Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.&nbsp;<sup>10<\/sup>Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, for you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Psalm:<\/strong> Psalm 112:1-9<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>1 <\/sup>Hallelujah!<br>\n&nbsp; Happy are they who fear the Lord *<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and have great delight in his commandments!<br>\n<sup>2 <\/sup>Their descendants will be mighty in the land; *<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the generation of the upright will be blessed.<br>\n<sup>3 <\/sup>Wealth and riches will be in their house, *<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and their righteousness will last for ever.<br>\n<sup>4 <\/sup>Light shines in the darkness for the upright; *<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the righteous are merciful and full of compassion.<br>\n<sup>5 <\/sup>It is good for them to be generous in lending *<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and to manage their affairs with justice.<br>\n<sup>6 <\/sup>For they will never be shaken; *<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the righteous will be kept in everlasting remembrance.<br>\n<sup>7 <\/sup>They will not be afraid of any evil rumors; *<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; their heart is right;<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; they put their trust in the Lord.<br>\n<sup>8 <\/sup>Their heart is established and will not shrink, *<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; until they see their desire upon their enemies.<br>\n<sup>9 <\/sup>They have given freely to the poor, *<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and their righteousness stands fast for ever;<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; they will hold up their head with honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gospel:<\/strong> Matthew 25:31\u201340<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>\u2018When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. <sup>32<\/sup>All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, <sup>33<\/sup>and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. <sup>34<\/sup>Then the king will say to those at his right hand, \u201cCome, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;
